In February and March I was able to design and sew another row of 12 inch square compositions in my small still life series. It felt good to work my design muscles again. And I really do love seeing things in a row. Also, as I anticipate my gallery finally opening in April, it was just the right size project with everything else I needed to accomplish.

This composition is #11 in my small still life studies, but that is a bulky title for such a small work. So the current working title is Yellow Bloom #1. Remember these are only pieced, not yet quilted. The quilting will add another layer of design and smooth out the surface. I want to piece the whole series before I start quilting.

I particularly like the ground colors in this one. I think the rust and purple work well together.

Okay, this one is very different that any of the previous 12 small still life studies. It has the greatest variation of value in the ground. It is also lighter than any of the other studies. Yet, I think it still works. Part of the point of working in a series is to explore possibilities.

Again, another variation that is different than the previous 13 studies. I wanted to use my dark green, but not have it stand out. I love the dark green with the rich blues. Blue is not one of my go to hues, but I think it works in this piece.

I got over ambitious in this last one. The ground is broken up into more pieces than the previous 4 yellow blooms. This made it more difficult to sew it together. A good reminder that I do not need to overcomplicate things — more is not always better.
The last photo below is to share one of my sources of inspiration — the colors of the sky. I love both sunrises and sunsets.
